This dish features hearty patties made from mashed black beans blended with oats, breadcrumbs, and aromatic vegetables like bell pepper and onion. Seasoned with a mix of cumin, smoked paprika, and chili powder, the patties cook to a crispy golden exterior while staying tender inside. They can be pan-fried or baked, then served on buns with fresh lettuce, tomato, and your favorite sauces. Great for meal prep and adaptable for vegan diets by substituting flaxseed egg. Add the oats, breadcrumbs, egg (or flaxseed egg), bell pepper, onion, garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until fully combined.

Questions & Answers

How do I make the patties hold together without eggs?

Use a flaxseed egg made by mixing 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed with 2.5 tablespoons water and letting it sit for a few minutes until gelatinous. This binds the ingredients effectively.

Can these patties be baked instead of fried?

Yes, baking at 400°F (200°C) for about 20 minutes, flipping halfway, produces a similarly crisp exterior while cooking the patties through.

What spices add the best flavor to black bean patties?

Cumin, smoked paprika, and chili powder create a warm and slightly smoky profile that complements the beans and vegetables perfectly.

How can I prepare these patties ahead of time?

Shape the patties and freeze them on a parchment-lined sheet for 30 minutes, then transfer to freezer bags. Keep frozen for up to 3 months and thaw before cooking.

What are good serving suggestions for these black bean patties?

Serve on toasted buns with lettuce, tomato, sliced onion, and sauces like chipotle mayo or mustard. They pair well with sweet potato fries or a fresh salad.
