# How-To:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
02 - Divide the marshmallows and butter into three equal portions, approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - In a large saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Stir in a few drops of red gel food coloring until desired shade is reached. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until evenly coated. Press firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until coated. Gently press over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in a few drops of blue gel food coloring. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - If desired, sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the mixture is still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using the parchment paper, slice into 16 squares, and serve.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • The layers look impressive but require zero baking skills—just melting, mixing, and gentle pressing.
  • Kids go wild decorating the top with sprinkles, making this a perfect party prep activity that actually tastes great.
  • You can make these the morning of your gathering since they set in just an hour, freeing up your afternoon for actual celebration.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is absolutely essential—liquid coloring will release moisture into your marshmallow mixture and turn what should be chewy into what becomes gummy and unpleasant.
  • The one-hour cooling time isn't a suggestion; try cutting before that and your layers will squish together and lose their definition.
03 -
  • Lightly wet your knife under warm water and wipe it dry between cuts for clean, precise slices instead of jagged, marshmallow-smeared edges.
  • If anyone in your group has texture preferences, you can customize portions—some people love the chew, others prefer letting them sit out longer until they firm up more.
